By executing several pieces of ascending difficulty, such as a ring followed by a brooch, the trainee learns how to design jewelry, both geometric and free design, how to identify the malleability and melting properties of various metals, and gains practice in welding procedures, including the mixture of components required for each metal and the degree of heat to be applied. The trainee will also be shown how to use the bow saw for liming and emery, how to shape metal using pressure, drills and other tools, and how to carve with acids and alkalis.
